Medical Sociology and Health Psychology
The research focus medical sociology and health psychology deals with psychological and social (interpersonal) influences on oral health and disease.
Medical sociology
Medical sociology is partially concerned with issues of social medicine like social inequality and oral health or behavioral factors on oral health (e.g. due to diet, oral hygiene, or healthcare utilization). Yet the field also deals with the sociology of the dental healthcare system, with emphases such as the patient-dentist relationship or the research field of health and illness behavior.
Health psychology
There is a smooth transition between the aformentioned topics and the field of health psychology which primarily focuses on such psychological aspects as stress and oral health or prevention and health promotion. Futhermore projects which require qualitative or quantitative social scientific methodology are also assigned to this research focus like the study to determine costs of hygiene measures in German dental practices.
